Slash-and-burn agriculture, often criticized for its environmental impacts, remains a vital livelihood strategy for millions of smallholder farmers across the tropics. This perspective article examines the dual nature of the practice—its ecological consequences and its cultural and economic significance. It argues that instead of outright condemnation, a nuanced understanding is required to reconcile traditional knowledge with modern sustainability goals.
