Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a severe mood disorder, is characterized by cognitive–affective and physical symptoms in the week before menses and affects millions of women worldwide. A significant recent development is the recognition of PMDD as a distinct disorder in the DSM-5 . In 2012, a committee of international experts on the pathophysiology and treatment of PMDD submitted to the American Psychiatric Association DSM-5 Executive Committee a review of the current science regarding PMDD and gave their recommendation for PMDD's inclusion in the DSM-5 as a full diagnostic category
