Biography | ||
Dr. Raman Balu is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering and a post-graduate (by research) in Aeronautical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. He joined the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) of ISRO in 1971 and has been working on thermal protection system (TPS) design and Secondary Injection Thrust Vector Control (SITVC) systems development for all the Indian launch vehicles. He designed and developed the air pre-heating system for the India’s first hypersonic wind tunnel at VSSC. He got his doctorate in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1990 for his work 3-D Nozzle flows with Thrust Vector Control. He initiated the CFD activities in the Aerodynamics Division of VSSC in 1998, which culminated in the development of the PARAS-3D CFD code and the PARAS tf1.2 parallel Linux cluster at VSSC in 2003. He has about 100 publications in national and international journals and conference proceedings and has published more than 200 internal reports in VSSC. He is a life member of the Aeronautical Society of India and also the Astronautical Society of India. He retired as Group Director, Aerodynamics and Aerothermodynamics Group, VSSC in October 2006, after 35 years of service in ISRO. Presently, he is working as Dean ( Research ), ACE College of Engineering, Thiruvallam, Trivandrum. Prior to this he has served as, Dean, School of Mechanical Engineering, Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE) , Kumaracoil, KK District, Tamil Nadu, from 2006 to 2014.. He was also a member of the Board of Management of NICHE, its Academic Council and its Research and Development Board and the Board of Studies for Aeronautical engineering and Avionics. He is an approved guide for doctoral research of Anna University Chennai, PRIST University, Thanjavur and the University of Kerala. He is also the examiner for doctoral students of the Department of Computer Applications of University of Bangalore. He has taught both undergraduate and post graduate students in the areas of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, boundary layer theory , propulsion and aero-acoustics , computational fluid dynamics and has guided more than 60 students in their final year projects. He is also on the panel of the Recruitment and Assessment Board of DRDO, New Delhi. He is also a member of the coordination committee of the Aeronautical Society of India, Chennai region. He has been selected for inclusion as a listee for the Marquis Who’s Who of the World, USA, ( 32nd Edition, 2015). His areas of interest are boundary layer heat transfer, nozzle and jet flows, computational fluid dynamics, aerodynamic shape optimization, heat transfer in nano-fluids and surrogate modeling of expensive time consuming simulation data. |
