Performance Analysis of Power Swing In Distance Relay (Quadrilateral Relay) Characteristics for Series-Compensated Transmission Line

Abstract

A distance relaying scheme is prone to power swing. To avoid unintended trip during such conditions, a power swing blocking function is utilized in distance relays. However, if a fault occurs during power swing blocking, the relay should detect the fault and trip as soon as possible. The detection of fault in a seriescompensated line during the power swing is further complicated due to complex transients produced by series capacitor and the Metal–Oxide Ariston (MOV) protecting it. Quadrilateral characteristics provide highly suitable protection for Transmission line as compared to other characteristics. Quadrilateral relay provides flexible protection during high fault resistance of ground and phase faults. This also provides fault impedance coverage for both phase to phase and phase to ground faults without effecting load encroachment. In this paper the performances of power swing in Quadrilateral relay is simulated through PSCAD/EMTDC.
