Biography :

Dr. A.Vijayalakshmi is a Principal Scientist at Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad. Joined CCMB in the year of 1997.Obtained MSc in Organic Chemistry from Osmania University, M Phil in Chemistry from Hyderabad Central University. During service as a Scientist in CCMB obtained the PhD in Chemistry (in the field of Nanotechnology) from Osmania University. Till now obtained 20-25 publications in high impact factor of International journals and has patents from US and as well from india. Presented the research work in several international and national conferences related to Chemistry and biology interfaces sciences. Invited speaker of JNTU in nanotechnology t for the classes of undergraduate teachers and for the national conferences of other universities. Guided several students for their short projects during the summer season, few dissertations students and coordinated in guiding the PhD students. Developed a triglyceride Biosensor which has been patented from US. We focus on optimal design of a sustained/ controlled release system necessitates a thorough understanding of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug. Working on the development of a Microbial fuel cell devices where bacteria used as a catalyst to oxidize organic and inorganic matter and generate current. Engineering a fungal proteins for high affinity binding to the heavy metals to use them in the field of bioremediation. Functionalizing the nanoparticles for a specific and targeted drug delivery.

Biography :

Lakshmi Rao is Principal Scientist at the Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology, Hyderabad, a position she has held since 1999 (after joining CCMB in 1995). She graduated from Lakshmi Narayan Institute of Technology in Biochemistry, Nagpur in 1993. While serving as Scientist at CCMB, completed her PhD at Hyderabad, Department of Genetics, Osmania University, Hyderabad. She completed her postdoctoral studies in 2013 at Florida International University, Miami, United States. In 1997 she joined Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, as a Scientist on Contract establishing Chromosome Diagnostics Services. Lakshmi’s group has been associated with chromosomal diagnostic services. So far she submitted about 12,000 reports for various referrals of genetic disorders including prenatal referrals. Her group research activities focus on reproductive disorders and deal with a whole gamut of disorders related to human reproductive genetics. A part of her study involving recurrent miscarriages, ovarian failure, male infertility, endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome in the Indian population wherein novel chromosome defects and mutations were identified associated with these various disorders. A part of her study includes developing and validating the ability of two novel biosensors to rapidly detect unspecified DNA damage. Cytogenetic measurement of DNA damage using comet, micronuclei and chromosome aberration assays is performed by culturing blood cells in the presence of agents known to elicit DNA damage (e.g UV and hydrogen peroxide). These industry-standard assays will be used to test the sensitivity and specificity of the biosensors being developed. Another facet of her studies relate to establishment of primary cell lines from reptiles especially from various Indian snakes and crocodiles which were subsequently characterized cytogenetically. She was awarded the travel grants from Royal Society of Edinburgh, and presented her work in London, Japan and United States. She has about 42 publications and successfully coordinated in guidance of PhD students and imparted training in cytogenetics to several students and establishing centers for human cytogenetics. Finally her contributions in cytogenetics helped in bridging patients as geneticist with clinicians and doctors across the country and provided tremendous help for human cause in society.
