Term ecology deals with the study of structure and function of Ecosystem. The Earth itself is a mega ecosystem where interaction among biotic and abiotic components allows the system to function on its own, especially without losing its ecological balance. Even though, there has been technological advancement, the environmental cost paid by humankind for such techniques is heavy. In other words, no technology invented by men was 100 percent sustainable in the long run. Since, future of humanity lies in the hands of sustainable development, keen observation of nature and interpretation of each process with our scientific knowledge may provide an insight for designing a technique, which is economically feasible, ecologically viable, culturally and socially acceptable in the long run.

Our non-renewable energy based industrial revolution and faulty land use pattern, have lead to global warming and subsequent climatic changes; actions that were taken in the agricultural sector in the past for feeding the hunger with the help of synthetic fertilizers, and pesticides and genetically altered food crops etc. have lead to land degradation. Similarly, development made in the field of medicine has lead to population explosion in India (decreased mortality and improved fertility rate). Many examples can be added in the above context to prove that every human effort when targeted beyond the Earth’s carrying capacity, environmental degradation is unavoidable.

Time has come to change the mindset of people that man cannot rule over the entire species present on this beautiful planet viz., the Earth. Paradigm shift in solving the environmental issues is much needed. Scientific researches, case studies, conducted in the field of ecology and environment, will disclose several truths about the nature, which will further aid in bringing the paradigm shift in managing environmental problems in the larger interest of people and their future generations.

Negative impact of developmental programs on natural ecosystem, climate change and the shifting of habitat by flora and fauna, urbanization and loss of species diversity, population pressure and the depleted common property resources, and distorted village ecosystem etc. are constantly telling human race that it is time to retrospect his approach to realign with the nature.

As stated by Dalai Lama, all creatures in this earth want one thing from man that is right to live and not defense because time will teach them the survival technique, they need. All scriptures are also implicating the same that by ahimsa (non -violence) ecological balance can be brought back. Additionally, it must be realized by everyone that nature does not want any conservationist, and only man is indulged in conservation because, otherwise his future will be in trouble without the company of fellow living things.

As a result, dissemination of information pertaining to ecology and environment is the need of the hour. The print-media and electronic media play major role in spreading such knowledge to the learning mass. The effort taken by the journal Research and Review - Ecology and Environmental sciences in publishing latest original research findings and information in the field of Ecology is very much welcoming. I wish the reader for getting latest information in the field of ecology and environmental science.
