Performance analysis of MIMO-OFDM for multiple antennas

Abstract

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) uses multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver side. In recent times the demand for the use of MIMO systems has increased due to its capability of robustness against Multipath fading and increase in the Spatial Multiplexing Gain and Spatial Diversity Gain. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is one of the best digital modulation schemes, where signal is divided into number of narrow band channels to obtain spectral efficiency and minimizing the Inter Symbol Interference (ISI). For broadband communications, OFDM turns a frequency selective channel into a set of parallel flat channels, which significantly reduces the receiver complexity. In this paper, MIMO-OFDM techniques are used to increase the performance efficiency by having multiple transmit and receive antenna for the Rayleigh channel. The reference model SISO, MISO, MIMO(2X2) are designed and simulated in MATLAB. The evaluation of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) performance of the MIMO-OFDM technique combined with Alamouti Space Time Block Codes (STBC) based on 16 QAM over Rayleigh Channels are carried out.
